We hold the pen.
We write the narrative that creates a path for Black girls and women to creatively and academically explore and define for themselves what is beautiful and what that means. We take up our pen as educators, storytellers, and activists determined to thoughtfully bring a balanced composition on the experiences and nature of Black girls and women.
The Pen approach aims to create a space to gather, equip and encourage Black girls and women. Here, we use writing as a tool to express our power to own our stories and tell them in our own voices. In this space, we use writing to practice self-exploration and self-definition. We wrestle with words, those written about us and those we write, wielding and commanding them to lend themselves to a truer and more honest telling of the existence and evolution of our being.
