Dear Black Girl,
What an honor it is to share this world with you. I don’t know your name. I don’t know where you are from. I don’t know what you like or dislike. But, I do know you. You are brave. You are smart. You are courageous and kind. You are strong and beautiful. I couldn’t imagine this world if you didn’t exist in it.
Life, black girl, isn’t always easy or fair. Sometimes it feels like a burden, and you can’t imagine why you’re going through the things you’re experiencing. Sometimes, you get angry because everyone but you seems to be happy and perfect. What you need to know, though, is that if you keep your eyes and heart open, you’ll discover that life is wondrous and majestic. You’ll discover that life is worth living, and worth living well! There are so many things I want to prepare you for, but personal experience is often the best way to learn and I wouldn’t want to cheat you out of learning firsthand. Instead, I’ll share a few things that I hope you’ll remember as you live your beautiful life:
You are worthy of love. You deserve to love and to be loved in return. Don’t be so afraid of losing people that you never fully give them your love. And never question whether or not love is for you—it is! However, never beg anyone to love you. Your love is a treasure and you are worth the work. Love yourself first and love will find you.
You are worthy of respect. Respect yourself, respect others, and accept nothing less from anyone else. There is never a reason that anyone should call you out of your name, mistreat you, or make you feel like you are less than them. If you ever find yourself in those situations, find new people to share your time with. You are just as good as anyone you meet.
You are worthy of every dream. Your dreams aren’t silly and they certainly are not unattainable. Keep dreaming, knowing that you can achieve anything you want. There may be times when a door closes, but that doesn’t have to be the end of your dream. A closed door doesn’t always mean “no.” Instead, it may mean “not now.” Use the “not now” moments in your life as encouragement to persevere. Keep chasing your dreams!
You are worthy of health. Your body is the one and only you have. Protect it. Nourish it. Strengthen it. Make others earn it.
You are worthy of an education. Go to school and study anything you want. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t be a dancer, a teacher, a lawyer, an engineer, an actress, an accountant, a writer, or any other career you want to have. Study your craft. Get your education and go after what you want.
You are worthy of the world. You deserve to explore this amazing world we live in and to feel comfortable doing so. Meet people who are different than you. Learn a new language. Eat foods that you’ve never heard of. Go discover the world and let the world discover you.
You are worthy of friendship. You have so much to offer others, and you should always give people a chance because they have much to offer you. Be kind to anyone you meet, especially girls. It is so easy for us to tear each other down, but our energy is best spent when we build each other up. Celebrate what is great about people, and they will celebrate you!
You are worthy of your beauty. God made no mistake when He gave you your hair, your lips, your color, your height. He made you beautiful in His image. You don’t look like everyone else and you are not supposed to. You are uniquely you and you are perfect! Love your beauty and don’t shy away from letting it shine.
You are worthy of your life. You are no accident.
You are worthy of these words. It is easy to not believe people when they tell you how wonderful you are, but trust me, you are amazing. These words are for you and you deserve them!
I don’t know your name. I don’t know where you’re from. I don’t know what you like or dislike. But, I do know you because you are me, and I couldn’t imagine this world if you didn’t exist in it.
With all respect and love,
